Last night Ryan and I got to experience our first opera, and we loved it! The opera was called La Doriclea. It was written in 1645 by composter Francesco Cavalli and librettist Giovanni Faustini. It was three acts and 4 hours long and a Juilliard Opera workshop production. I was lucky enough to score two tickets at the last minute as per the recommendation of one of my students, Juan, who played the Armenian king, Tigranes. Of course the singing was incredible, but the costumes were fantastic and set was good. It was pretty easy to follow even though the supertitles were hard to read when more than 5 people were on stage.
Ryan and I are learning all about opera, from the construction of the piece with arias, recitativos, cavatinas and ritornellos to what different voices sound like and how different composers can be identified through their work. We hope to learn more and see many more operas in the future. If you've never seen one, we highly recommend going.

I really enjoy the ritornellos, too, especially with a good pesto sauce on top. And a good cavatina (say, 1986 vintage?) goes really well with them.
And tell me, is it true? That it ain’t over ‘til the fat lady sings?
Sounds like you’ve got some awesome opportunities to enjoy some great musical and dramatic performances. Ryan will end up cultured yet!
Love, Dad S.
